What Spaying and Neutering Involves

It’s best to wait until female dogs and cats reach around five months old before having them spayed. After they’re old enough, bring your pet to Nanuet Animal Hospital for the procedure. We complete a checkup to ensure your dog or cat is healthy enough to undergo surgery without complications.

Pets receive anesthesia to keep them calm and comfortable during the operation. Once it’s done, pet owners receive instructions on properly caring for their pets. You should restrict their movements for up to two weeks until after the surgery. Don’t bathe them or let them run around until their sutures are removed.

Our veterinarian only recommends vaccines thought to be necessary to protect dogs and cats.

Typical recommendations for dog vaccines include the following:

• Rabies — Protects dogs who end up bitten or exchanges fluids with another infected animal. Without treatment, rabies is 100% fatal.
• Bordetella — Protects against your pet ending up with Bordetella bronchiseptica, a disease that leads to upper respiratory inflammation. Without treatment, puppies may develop bronchopneumonia in puppies, while older dogs with compromised immune systems could end up with bronchitis.
• Distemper — Protects against the airborne disease that may cause brain damage in dogs.
• Parvovirus — Parvovirus causes symptoms like severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea and could lead to death without timely treatment.
• Leptospirosis — Contracted by contacting the urine of other infected animals.

Our facility also provides the following vaccines to cats:

• Feline Leukemia — An essential vaccine that protects cats from feline leukemia, the second-biggest cause of death among cats outside of accident trauma.
• FVRCP — Protects cats from rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia, all of which can be fatal without treatment.

Dental for Dogs and Cats

Your pet’s oral hygiene is just as important as other aspects of their health. Nanuet Animal Hospital offers dental for dogs and cats, including cleanings, extractions, and repairs. We also perform x-rays to look at the internal structures of your pet’s mouth. Pet owners should bring their dog or cat in at least once per year. Regular cleanings prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar that can lead to gum issues.
