Spay and Neuter Services

Having your dog or cat spayed and neutered helps control your local pet population. After having spay and neuter services, your pet no longer feels the urge to go outside as much and place themselves in dangerous situations. Other ways your dog or cat can benefit from being spayed or neutered include the following:

Hormone fluctuation relief
Less risk of female pets ending up with breast cancer
Control over feelings of anxiety
Protects female dogs and cats from pyometra, a uterine infection

Male dogs benefit from getting neutered by:

Experiencing a lower risk of developing a prostate infectionf
No longer having a strong urge to go outside and roam
Feeling less aggressive toward other male animals
Removing the risk of developing prostate cancer

What Spaying and Neutering Involves

It’s best to wait until female dogs and cats reach around five months old before having them spayed. After they’re old enough, bring your pet to Nanuet Animal Hospital for the procedure. We complete a checkup to ensure your dog or cat is healthy enough to undergo surgery without complications.

Pets receive anesthesia to keep them calm and comfortable during the operation. Once it’s done, pet owners receive instructions on properly caring for their pets. You should restrict their movements for up to two weeks until after the surgery. Don’t bathe them or let them run around until their sutures are removed.

Emergency Vet Care

No one wants to see their pet in distress. Nanuet Animal Hospital is ready to help if the unexpected happens and you need emergency vet services. We have everything required to assess your pet’s condition and decide on the next steps, including the following:

Imaging
Ultrasounds
Diagnostics
Digital Radiology
Endoscopy

Give us a call beforehand to brief us on your pet’s status. That gives our staff time to set up the proper equipment and get to work immediately once you arrive. Pet owners should bring their dog or cat in for treatment if they notice any of the following issues:

Ongoing lethargy
Heatstroke symptoms
Bloody vomit or stool
Rapid or weak pulse
Fainting
Seizures
Broken bones
Lameness in one or more limbs
Dehydration

Dogs with larger chests can end up with a condition called gastric torsion. It’s a disorder that causes stomach dilation if food and gases build up. As a result, dogs cannot rid themselves of excess in their stomach, causing a lot of discomfort. Try to stabilize your pet and reach out to our facility if the situation worsens.

Cat and Dog Vaccinations

Vaccines for pets work the same way they do for humans. Getting your dog or cat vaccinated protects them from diseases and illnesses. They also boost the immunity system, giving your pet what they need to fight infections. As a result, getting cat and dog vaccinations reduces the spread of pet disease and improve your pet’s quality of life.

Nanuet Animal Hospital staff are happy to answer pet owners’ questions about various vaccines. We want owners leaving our facility feeling they’re getting the correct information and that their dog or cat will be safe after taking a recommended vaccine. Our veterinarian only recommends vaccines thought to be necessary to protect dogs and cats.

Typical recommendations for dog vaccines include the following:

  • Rabies — Protects dogs who end up bitten or exchanges fluids with another infected animal. Without treatment, rabies is 100% fatal.
  • Bordetella — Protects against your pet ending up with Bordetella bronchiseptica, a disease that leads to upper respiratory inflammation. Without treatment, puppies may develop bronchopneumonia in puppies, while older dogs with compromised immune systems could end up with bronchitis.
  • Distemper — Protects against the airborne disease that may cause brain damage in dogs.
  • Parvovirus — Parvovirus causes symptoms like severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea and could lead to death without timely treatment.
  • Leptospirosis — Contracted by contacting the urine of other infected animals.

Our facility also provides the following vaccines to cats:

  • Feline Leukemia — An essential vaccine that protects cats from feline leukemia, the second-biggest cause of death among cats outside of accident trauma.
  • FVRCP — Protects cats from rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia, all of which can be fatal without treatment.

Dental for Dogs and Cats

Your pet’s oral hygiene is just as important as other aspects of their health. Nanuet Animal Hospital offers dental for dogs and cats, including cleanings, extractions, and repairs. We also perform x-rays to look at the internal structures of your pet’s mouth. Pet owners should bring their dog or cat in at least once per year. Regular cleanings prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar that can lead to gum issues.

Bring your pet in for dental care if you notice any of the following problems:

Tartar buildup
Broken or loose teeth
Discoloration of teeth
Chewing issues
Extra teeth
Bleeding gums
Mouth swelling
Signs of pain in your pet’s mouth
Ongoing bad breath
